The Very Hungry Caterpillar

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle (ages 1-6) is a classic children’s book that I grew up with as a child. Metamorphosis is one of those amazing processes of life that both children and adults can appreciate. This story brings back many memories as a child and now I am forming the new memories with my own children. This book has always meant a lot to me but has recently become even more symbolic with the finding of a lunar moth caterpillar that arrived on our porch one day. The following day we visited the beautiful butterfly exhibit at the Greenburgh Nature Center in Scarsdale. After showing them some pictures of the caterpillar, they offered to have her part of their exhibit. We named her “Bessie” and tried to take care of her as best as we could until we donated her. Unfortunately, Bessie did not make it past a couple of days 🙁 but it did spark a lot of interest with my children and the process of metamorphosis. When reading this book, emphasize actions, colors, days of the week, sequencing, expanding vocabulary (define words such as metamorphosis, cocoon, etc), size, and much more.
