Poppy, Buttercup, Bluebell & Dandy

In this crazy winter weather, the book Poppy, Buttercup, Bluebell & Dandy is the perfect book! When the weather outside (at least here in NY) is in the single digits and fluctuating on a daily basis, we dream about the warm weather and walking outside in the spring time. With Spring feeling very far away, this book can bring a little color to your dinner table when reading together. When this book arrived from Penguin, I was immediately impressed with the texture and illustrations of the book. I felt like the book itself was a piece of artwork and the text and characters brought the images to life. The story begins with four colorful characters named Poppy, Buttercup, Bluebell and Dandy who discover that the last park in the city will be closing down. How can they save it? They go on an adventure to spring their magic to his gray and empty park. Will they make it in time? Find out by reading the book which just released!

As a children’s book author, I am always fascinated by unique illustrations. When reading this book, I wondered how the art was created. When I read the bio about Fiona Woodcock, the author and illustrator, I saw that she used children’s blow pens to illustrate this book. What a wonderful carryover activity! I decided to purchase my own art supplies and see what my children came up with after reading this beautiful and magical book. If you don’t have blow pens, engage your child in a discussion about their favorite flower and how they would save the park from closing. Ask questions like “Why is it important to have parks?”, “What would the world be without flowers?”

Instead of blow pens, I purchased the air marker spray pens from Crayola and my kids loved it! The sprayer comes with stencils but the spray pens can be used in anyway that you want. The artwork comes out really unique and is easy for children of all abilities. The markers are also washable which makes clean up easy.
