Gravitybread Presents Adam Rubin

adam rubinI was fortunate to be able to interview Adam Rubin, the author of one of my favorite books, “Dragons Love Tacos”. See my review here. Adam is a witty, clever and engaging author.  Check out his website at He is also the author of “Those Darn Squirrels!”, “Those Darn Squirrels and the Cat Next Door” and “Those Darn Squirrels Fly South”.

What inspired you to write “Dragons Love Tacos?”

I was inspired to write Dragons Love Tacos by a little statue that my dad had on his desk when I was a child. It was a bit abstract, but to me, it looked like a dragon eating a taco.

Why did you choose tacos as the dragons favorite food?
It just seems to make sense that dragons would love tacos. Not spaghetti. Not ice cream. It had to be tacos. The more I thought about it, the more surprised I was that no one had realized the connection before me.
What was your favorite book as a child?
My favorite book as a child was The Giver by Lois Lowry. I loved the special powers and secret knowledge. I re-read the story recently and there were a lot of dystopic elements I didn’t pick up on as a kid. I actually think they are making a movie version soon.
After reading “Dragons Love Tacos” to my children, they wanted to try all different tacos (even with spicy salsa!). Additionally, they also developed a liking for dragons. What would you like children to remember most about your book?
I hope that when kids read the book, they get a sense that life can be fun; friends can make you laugh, food can make you happy and if something goes wrong, there is almost always a way to make things better. I’m not sure if there is one big message that I want kids to take away from the book but if I can inspire a generation to enjoy mexican food, that would be enough for me.
