The Little Elephant Who Wants to Fall Asleep takes the reader through an adventure with Ellen the Elephant through a magical forest that leads to a night of deep relaxing sleep. On this magical adventure, the reader meets various characters that shape the story such as Snoring Sophie, Roger the Rabbit and Muddle Mouse. In the beginning of the book, the author gives specific instructions on how to read this book to achieve the greatest results of a good night sleep. The author instructs the reader to read the book themselves so they are familiar with the text. This familiarity can help the adult easily engage with their child when reading the story. When a word is in bold, the word such be emphasized and when the words are in italics, the words should be said in a soothing voice. The Little Elephant Who Wants to Fall Asleep also has the option of adding your child’s name to the story (with the prompt “name”) and prompting the reader to “yawn” during certain points of the story. Yawn are definitely contagious!
Before reading this story, I followed the instructions and read the story through before reading it to my child. As I read this book for the first time, I noticed how soothing and relaxing the story was for not only myself but for my child. I became tired as the reader, which in turn helped my own child prepare for the night of sleep. The second time I read it to my child, I was more familiar with the story so I was able to emphasize certain parts of the story when reading the text. At the end of the book, the author shares additional tips on how to use the book and commonly asked questions (such as “What age is this book for?”, and “Should I add my child’s name to the story if it wakes her up?” This book can be helpful for a variety of ages and can be an excellent tool to use for increase relaxation and sleepiness.
