Toca Kitchen Monsters by Toca Boca is a fun and entertaining app for both children and their parents. When I first came across this app I decided to download it considering I love all of the Toca apps. When you begin this app, you choose a monster. Once you choose a monster, you can choose a food from the left side of the screen. Once you choose a food you can select a way to cook it on the right side of the screen. You can blend, boil, saute, microwave and even cut. This is an excellent way to teach your child how to cook foods in many different ways. Once you finish cooking it, you feed it to the monster to see if they like it or not. The monsters are hysterical because they have exaggerated facial expressions, affect, and excellent body language to let you know if they like a food or not. The kids love to feed them and wait in anticipation to see what will happen. When playing this game you can focus on the following language concepts: actions (e.g. saute, boil), new vocabulary (foods and types of kitchen equipment), prepositions, colors, categories (e.g. “What food is a vegetable?”), feelings, sequencing and describing. Try out these different ways to cook at home and ask your child, “What do you like better, saute or boil?”. Have fun feeding the monsters!
